Help is greatly appeciated. Computer: 2009 MBP 13'. HDD: WD 500GB. I got to Step 16, but I was unable to click continue so that I could install the iLife applications disc. Just ordered a SSD from Amazon, and have all of my stuff backed up on the external hard drive I use for backing up. I still have all of my installation CDs, but want to make sure of the tools I need for this. I know I take the battery out, and that metal cover in that area, but for my Mac I'm not sure if it would be the same tools since it is older than what you guys have. Also, one quick question, can I change the processor in this? I will be switching out the ram soon, likely after tax season, but I want to get a faster processor if possible. MBP late 2011 replaced HD with SSD (Samsung 850 EVO). The angle on the install was that my Time Machine and Old HD were encrypted. When encrypted (Time Machine and CCC clone of drive), the Recovery HD is not setup (not sure details, perhaps this is how encryption works). Either way, setting up a bootable Install USB drive (8 gig minimum for Yosemite) was necessary. Sequence was full backup (I did both Time Machine and CCC to be sure)., create bootable USB installer drive (Google it, I used the Disk Utility method). Shut Down, Reboot with Command-R, plug in USB drive, format new disk, load Yosemite from USB to new disk, then shut down, Restart with Command-R, then load Time Machine backup. The clean Yosemite install setup the Recover Partition on new drive and the files copied from Time Machine restored system to original state without messing with newly created Recovery partition.

After doing a lot of research and trying out some hints, finally I could install Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard on an iMac G5 1.8 GHz, and I would like to share with you the solution that I got. This works for PowerPC Macs that don't have a Dual Layer DVD, and you wish to install Leopard using an external USB Drive instead. Start by creating the disc image of the installation media (this can be DMG, CDR, ISO or any of the disc image formats supported by Mac OS X).

In my case I used an external DVD (Dual Layer) drive with the Installation media to make the image - because the system doesn't recognize that drive in the Startup Manager (when I restart it while holding down Option key), neither was listed at System Preferences » Startup Disk. Note: you can skip this step and make the restore directly from theDVD - just dragging the DVD into the Source field - explained in step 4. Connect your external drive and launch Disk Utility. Select the drive in Disk Utility and then select the Partition tab. Make sure that the drive is formatted using an Apple Partition Map scheme, not GUID or MBR (you may need to reformat your drive to get it in this form).

Once the drive is in the Apple Partition Map scheme. Select the Restore tab of Disc Utility and drag the Disk Image (or the DVD in case you have an external drive) for the Installation Media onto the Source field.

Then drag the appropriate partition (in my case, the USB external drive) to the destination field. Click on restore. This may take a while to complete. Determine the partition where your bootable image it situated (e.g. An MacOSX DVD or DMG restored to a partion with Disk utility's restore). This might be disk1s3 in which case the partition number is 3. Also you can check it on Disk Utility, select the hard drive - right click on it and select 'Information,' and write down the 'Partition Number.'

Restart your iMac while holding down Command+Option+O+F. This will place you in Open Firmware.

Type dev / ls to get the device tree list. Look for something in the output like. Type devalias ud /ht/pci@2/usb@b/disk@2. In other words: make 'ud' equal to the path you found in step 9. 11.Now verify you got the right disk: dir ud:3, (3 is the partition number you wrote down in step 7). And look for a file with tbxi attribute, probably in: System Library CoreServices BootX, e.g.: dir ud:3, System Library CoreServices 12.Then boot from it: boot ud:3, System Library CoreServices BootX 13. Wait a little bit – while the iMac restarts and if you see the Leopard Installer begin, you're done.

crarko adds: This was a complex hint to edit, and while I tested some of the Open Firmware commands on an iMac G5, it is possible you will need to adjust some of the items depending on the PPC hardware you're working with. I think all the front slash/back slashes are correctly placed, but if any are misplaced please note this in the comments and I will correct them. This saved my day!! Here are some tidbits from my experience: -The USB had to be formatted as MACOS Extended, not Journaled. Otherwise, I only had 6.4GB usable space for a 6.7GB DMG file.The restore step took about 20min for me, as did the OS installation (trimmed of language and printer driver options) -For me, the location of the bootable USB was /pci@f2000000/usb@15,1/disk@1. I mention this because the ',1' was easy to miss on my machine and was needed.The BootX location provided in this post was spot-on for my 10.5.6 image. I can't thank you enough for the time and hassle you saved me!

Also, it was fun using OF mode for the second time. Dear Users, I have spent days trying to install leopard and think this guide is extremely good but I have a bit of a problem. On step 9, every time i type in the command 'dev / 1s', the mac then replies with 'unknown word'. I have also tried reversing the slashes and when i type 'dev 1s' the mac replies with 'can't find device 1s, unknown word'.

I have no idea why this is happening and would appreciate help from anyone who wishes to give it. IMac g5, 1.6GHz, 768mb ram, Mac OS X 10.4.11 Tiger.

Seems to be working for me now: the 10.5 installer is running on my G4 tower. I set up a USB drive with nothing on it but the 10.5 ISO, so there were no partitions, so I needed 'ud:, System Library.' I thought there might be a simpler way, considering that I already had 10.4 running - some way to say 'next time, boot from the USB drive' - but I haven't found such a way. In the meantime, I've learned about the existence of Open Firmware, started reading about it, and learned that it's a domain-specific dialect of Forth (who knew?!). This is for anyone looking for a solution to installing Leopard on a Mac PPC that doesn't have a CD/DVD drive. I had the very same dilemma and after searching the internet for days, i stumbled upon the solution by myself.

Maybe it's obvious or maybe not, but all External USB Hard drives are really just SATA/IDE hard disks cased in a metal box and given a usb port! Well, for this solution you will need any running version of Mac OSX leopard or snow, either on another mac, macbook or on the same machine you want to install in (if you're doing a re install) Use this running version to create a Mac OSX 10.5 image to the the external usb hd (DISK UTILITYRESTORE) Now Shut down the mac. Physically open the external USB Drive and take out the SATA disk inside. (you may need a screw driver) Open the Mac case Plug the SATA drive inside the mac you want to install in, alongside the normal SATA drive already inside the machine. Start the machine while holding Option/ Alt until a menu shows up. You can now install Mac OSX Leopard 10.5, and faster than a DVD install i might add.

With no DVD drive! No External Firewire drive! USB not an option because of PPC! But where there is a will the there is a way!

I am a PC guy for many many years but a complete Mac n00b. I got a G5 iMac from my brother-in law that had puked the hard drive. Of course, he had lost the install DVD in a flood this summer. I obtained a disk image of the Leopard DVD, but experienced much frustration as the drive does not read dual layer DVD. I tried a pared-down disk image on DVD-R, but no luck there. It just hung at the Apple and pinwheel. Ultimately, my solution also involved another Mac.

I popped a new 500 GB SATA hard drive into a USB enclosure, connected to my Windows box, and placed the.dmg on it. I connected it to the Mac Mini, and copied the file to the desktop. From there, I just wiped the SATA drive using Disk Utility, and created two APM-formatted partitions- one 20GB to hold the image and leave some extra space, and another one using the rest of the disk. From Disk Utility, I verified and then used Restore to copy the image to the 20 GB partition.

Since my G5 does not have the camera, removing the back to swap the hard drive was a cinch. At first it would not read it at all, and I then discovered that I needed to jumper the SATA drive to 1.5 GBps.

Once I did that, I booted using the Option key, selected the image partition, and installed to larger partition. For someone who has the very last iMac G5 with the camera, disassembly is more of an impediment. But getting to the guts of the earlier model could not be easier. Three screws on the lower edge of the unit and the back comes right off.

I managed to track down an ISO image of Leopard but couldn't figure out how to install it until I found your post. A couple of clarifications that may help others: Step 4: Drag the DMG file if that's what you have.

(This may be obvious but I'm a Mac noob, so wasn't sure). Step 7: You want the partition for the destination drive (the one you copied the image to in Step 4). The instruction in the original post is a little confusing. Step 9: You'll see a long list.

I had to go to the second page in the list to see my device. The root of the path was much longer than 'ht' (something like 'ht03,f2000000' - sorry, I didn't write it down). You have to use the entire string. In the example, 'disk@2' is a child of 'usb@b' - it will appear nested under usb@b in the listing (the example makes it look like it's at the same level). Step 11: The first dir command only shows you the top level path. The second example is the one you want to use.

After installing Leopard, run Software Update to get further updates to the OS and other Apply software on your machine (Safari, iTunes, etc.). You may have to run Software Update a couple of times. To get everything.

Great hint here really helpful. I have successfully done this on two of the imacs at work. However I am having trouble doing this on my mac pro G5 I have started up, same as the others, wrote down the tree, which is only slightly different, devalias the disk and the ud:3, which brought up a bit of info, exactly the same as the others so looks good. BUT when i then do the dir ud:3, system library coreservices bit my G5 crashes! It does nothing and i can't do anything. Really annoying as this is the one that is most in need of a good clean!

Anyone know what might be the problem or experienced this themselves? Great Article. I've already done this (thanks to this and other articles) back in February. I recently dropped my laptop again (doh!), and have had try to do this again. Last time I succeeded, and this time I'm failing. The only difference in my method between last time and this is that I have a different external drive. Last time, I used a 160 gig desktop drive in USB enclosure, and this time I'm trying to use a WD 1 terabyte drive.

My trouble is that when I 'dev ls', as per point 9. Of this article, I don't get a '/Disk@1' showing up for the 1tb drive. Just to be sure it wasn't a different problem, I formatted a USB stick to Mac OSX Extended, and looked for it in Open Firmware, and it did indeed show up as a '/Disk@1'. (I restored the.dmg of 10.5 onto the USB stick, and tried booting from that, but my laptop kept giving me the 'Circlebar' no-go symbol. Researching around on the web, it appears that flash sticks sometimes can't keep up with the computer's boot demands.) Does anyone know why this would be? Like I said, nothing I've done has changed except the external drive. One little difference I wonder about is that the first (successful) usb boot happened on a drive installed with Mac OSX Extended (not journaled), and the WD drive itself defies formatting that way.

When I try to format it as MOSXE using Disk Utility, I click on the physical drive in the left hand column, and it formats, creating a single partition on the physical drive, which it displays as a 'child' underneath the physical drive. When I browse the physical drive again using Disk Utility (by clicking on the erase or partition tab), the WD physical drive shows up as MOSXE(journaled) and not simply MOSXE. Could this have anything to do with why the drive won't show up under a usb device when I 'dev ls' in Open Firmware? After a few tries, I FOUND A SOLUTION. My powermac G5 is now on the nice 10.5.6:))) HERE'S A GUIDE FOR ALL THOSE OF YOU, WHO ARE STILL STUCK WITH THE GUIDE ABOVE: 1. If you are completly new and have no torrent downloader, download vuze.

Its a nice, small, free torrent downloader and it works:) 2. After that, you have to download the iso file. I chose the one on www.picktorrent.com/download/b7/173126/mac-os-x-leopard-10.5.6-full-retail/ it should work. If everything is done, a folder 'vuze downloads' should appear on documents.

Open it and go to mac os x install dvd. Inside should be a dmg file.

Plug your USB stick (8GB, better more) into the computer. The file system should be set to MAC OS X EXTENDED (NOT journaled) 4. Follow the guide above from step 3 til step 8. You're now in open firmware. Type in dev / ls and a list with all files will appear. Press space to scroll down. Now, you have a tree structure, you have to choose the leftest and go to right and bottom, till you reach /usb@b /disk@2 (it don't have to be exactly like that) then write down the whole path (in my case ht@0,f2000000/pci@8/usb@b/disk@2) 6.

Write devalias into the command prompt. It should appear a list.

You have to search the USB. (in my case USB2,USB3,USB1a,USB1b,USB1c) then I guessed that it would be USB2. My choice was the right, if your one isn't the right it will nothing happen in step 7.

Type dir (namefoundinstep6)/(disknamefoundinstep5):(partitionnumberfoundinstep7oftheguideabove), System Library CoreServices (in my case dir usb2/disk@2:10, System Library CoreServices) 8. Now a list should appear with the programs inside this folder. If a program with the name BootX and the atribute tbxi is there, you're almost done.

Type in boot (namefoundinstep6)/(disknamefoundinstep5):(partitionnumberfoundinstep7oftheguideabove), System Library CoreServices BootX 9. The installation should now begin.

I followed it exactly and it worked fine only difference is when I tried looking for the bootx it didn't find it at all but I still used the complete command and it worked as it should took some time rebooted itself and blamn! I thought I'd never see the installation screen!!! Used a 10.5.4.dmg for the transfer onto the removable sata drive.

I forgot to mention I did this on a G5 with 1.6ghz and 512ram worked perfectly. I have a G5 Imac 2 GHz machine with a faulty cd drive. I tried the hint and although all steps were correct once I got to 'boot ud:3, System etc '.

It always replied ' unknown word, HERE= ff9dfb71 '. So I ended up a formatting an external HD with 2 apple partitions.

One used to restore an image of Mac os x 10.5 and the other one free, hooked it up via target disk mode from another Mac, re-booted it up pressing 'c' and it worked for me. This was the only way after numerous attempts of target mode and Open Firmware failures. I am SUCH a noob to all things Mac. I bought this li'l PPC or G4 thing, as you guys call it. I call it an old-as-hell, boxy white thingy, pre-intel that hopefully will help me teach myself the basics of Mac before I drop $4K on a whole system. It is a little difficult to run Logic and Final Cut Pro on this computer with 10.4, so I upgraded the RAM and still nothing. Then I needed to upgrade OS's - um - how the HELL do you squeeze 6G on a DVD?

Windows is not real keen on dual whatever - as far as I have experienced, so I needed to boot form USB. YOU SAVED MY LIFE, well saved a lot of headaches, at least. You sure as hell made things a lot easier.

I did not even know what a 'node' was in the instructions, but they were so well written and concise with examples, it made it virtually impossible to screw up. I am booting up and installing 10.6 as we speak and will be a Mac Diva before long. Thank you SO much. You really do not know how much I appreciate the amount of time and revisions it had to take to make such an excellent tutorial. Great tutorial, with it I worked around for 2 hours but finally I was able to upgrade my G5 from Tiger to Leopard. Maybe it could be a bit well described how to sort out the correct path tree when you're into Open firmware, but everything is really well described.

Don't be surprised if partition number may vary in my case it was 10 and at first I was thinking that I made something wrong, but it was correct. Take care to write exact commands, because i.e. If you type wrong the USB path tree, it may give OK anyway but when you ask for DIR you get back an error, it drove me crazy and finally I found that I was writing pc@2 instead of pci@2!!!! Oh for people that arent' use an Apple keyboard to access Open firmware press: ALT + Windows key + O + F.

I don't see anything but pci@2000000 then I see /usb1b then see /disk1 is my ud pci@f2000000/usb@b1/disk@1 I am sorry to ask but I don't know what my ' UD' is and I don't have 'ht' anywhere either. When I type 'devalias pci@f2000000/usb@b1/disk@1 ' I get no alias I am new to this and trying it from usb flashdrive I have imac 1.2 ghz 512mb no disk drive that works I have 10.4.11 installed trying to go to 10.5 if I left anything out you need to know ask me. Howdee - im a new user, but registered for just this one long/detailed comment/reply. 0 - THANK YOU to all who came before on this hint/thread/comment. I am just standing on top of the giants before and adding my little comments for others. 1 - i could not make a windows-keyboard work.

In particular, my imac (g5) would 'ask' about it when powering up by having me press the key 'just inside of shift key' on each side. Thus, i was never able to make the keyboard-combo work correctly. If you cannot get into open-firmware, then try getting a normal MAC-keyboard. 2 - i was having all sorts of problems trying to get the correct device to use for the 'dir' command. I could see the tree of information, but could never make a working 'devalias' for myself.

Two clues:. a - if (when you type devalias xx yyy@yy yy yy yy) you receive a comment 'no alias' in response, then it did NOT work. You should see a 'good' response of just the word OK. Even so, i was never able to 'use' my own devalias. b - i noticed in one of the later-comments someone had tried just typing the word 'devalias' without anything else. When i typed that, i got a nice long list of predefined aliases.

In particular, i could see one called 'first-boot' that looked like it should access my working tiger-hdd internally. Also, if i just typed 'boot' it would do what youd expect boot from the first-boot device, which is the current internal hdd. 3 - i was finally able to get things working better by doing/trying the following (details removed for hopeful-clarity):. dir first-boot/@0:3, - and i finally saw something good. Nb, i needed the exact-extra-characters listed 7 chars starting with / and ending with to get a 'good' dir. And i assume others will have the devalias of 'first-boot' predefined like i did.

dir usb0/@1:3, - was the magic incantation i used for getting to my external-usb-key 8gb formatted/dmg-restored as needed. In particular, the '1:3' here on usb0 and the '0:3' with first-boot matched the disk:partition information i got when i looked at the key using the regular get-info command from tigers disk-utility. i could do a more-detailed 'dir' on the key until i got to the. CoreServices directory level.

I could NOT actually do a 'dir' on the BootX file itself. But the CoreServices directory showed the 'magic' tbxi flag on that BootX file that i expected to see. i could use the 'UP-ARROW' to repeat the last command that id typed, so that i could just change the 'dir' to a 'boot' and add the BootX to the end and it would work. (using left- and right-arrows to leave the other good characters in place) 4 - once i got my magic incantation correct, it took prolly an hour to get thru the first-boot - but eventually i got the great happy-mac sound from the other room. Hopefully you will be able to too.:) repeating: for me, the exact command i used was boot usb0/@1:3, System Library CoreServices BootX.
